How It Is Calculated
PSL Calculator
A PSL calculator estimates a PSL score by measuring facial symmetry and proportions from a photo and mapping them onto the 0-8 PSL scale. PSL Rank's calculator is free, needs no account, and runs entirely in your browser.
What a PSL Calculator Does
Manual PSL rating relies on someone eyeballing a photo. A calculator replaces that with measurement: it finds fixed anatomical points, computes the distances and angles between them, and converts the result into a number. The advantage is consistency - the same photo always returns the same score, which makes progress tracking possible.
How a PSL Score Is Calculated
- 01
Landmarks are placed
478 facial landmark points are located on the image, marking the eyes, brows, nose, mouth, jaw, and outline.
- 02
Distances are measured
Pairs of corresponding points on the left and right sides are compared, and vertical and horizontal spacing between features is measured.
- 03
Measurements are normalized
Values are scaled relative to overall face size and corrected for head tilt so results are comparable between photos.
- 04
The result maps to the scale
The combined deviation from reference proportions is converted into a score on the 0-8 PSL scale and its matching tier.
Which Measurements Matter
PSL-style assessments lean on measurements that can be taken repeatably from an image. You can inspect several of them individually with the free calculators:
- Left-right symmetry across corresponding landmark pairs
- Facial thirds - the vertical balance of upper, middle, and lower face
- Canthal tilt - the angle of the eye axis in degrees
- Golden ratio proportions - how close key ratios sit to 1.618
Limitations of Calculating PSL Online
A calculator measures geometry, not perception. Lighting, camera lens, distance, expression, and head rotation all shift the measurements, and traits that need a side profile - chin projection, nasal profile, jaw angle depth - cannot be read from a front-facing photo at all. An online result is a starting reference, not a diagnosis.
Calculate Your PSL Score
The free PSL test runs this calculation in your browser from one front-facing selfie and returns a preliminary PSL estimate with a tier range. To read the result, see the PSL scale and tier breakdown. For the complete analysis using front and side profile photos across 12 categories, the PSL Rank iPhone app runs the full scan.

What is a PSL calculator?
+
A PSL calculator estimates where a face sits on the 0-8 PSL scale by measuring facial proportions and symmetry from a photo, then mapping those measurements onto the scale's tiers.
How is a PSL score calculated?
+
Landmarks are placed on the face, distances and angles between them are measured, and those measurements are compared against reference proportions. The combined result is expressed as a single number from 0 to 8.
Is the PSL calculator free?
+
Yes. PSL Rank's browser test is free, requires no account and no payment, and runs the analysis on your device.
How accurate is an online PSL calculator?
+
It is consistent and repeatable, which makes it useful for comparison over time, but photo angle, lighting, and expression affect the result. Treat any online calculation as an estimate rather than a verdict.
Can a photo alone give a complete PSL score?
+
Not entirely. A single front-facing photo cannot show side profile traits such as chin projection or nasal profile, so a front-only calculation is preliminary by design.
