How We Measure Facial Symmetry
We use Google MediaPipe's FaceLandmarker to map 478 facial landmarks. The face is first roll-normalized: we estimate head tilt from the outer eye corners and rotate every landmark so the eye line is horizontal. This means a tilted photo will not unfairly read as asymmetric.
We then estimate the facial midline from stable central points (nose tip, nasion, philtrum, chin), reflect 18 bilateral landmark pairs — eye corners, brows, nose wings, mouth corners, cheek and jaw width — across that midline, and measure how far each reflected left-side point lands from its right-side partner. Distances are normalized by interocular distance for scale invariance.
The average deviation is mapped to a 0–8 score on the PSL scale. This is an aesthetics estimate, not a medical or clinical assessment.
